Haibane Renmei
Episode Guide
Episode 1- Cocoon · Dream of Falling from the Sky · Old
Home
The
episode begins as a girl falls from the sky. She is accompanied by a crow,
who tries to stop her from falling. The scene then moves to a winged girl
wandering down a stone hall. She looks in one of the rooms to find a
cocoon in the middle of the room. She drops everything (literally) and
runs down stairs. She quickly runs back up to put out a cigarette that she
dropped on the floor. Soon she has the room blocked off with police tape,
as she pushes back a horde of kids. All those kids also have wings.
She is joined by four other winged girls who began to frantically clean the room
for the new arrival. The girl that was falling wakes up in a cocoon,
filled with water and begins to claw her way out after hearing voices from the
outside. She then awakens in a room alone, soon to be bombarded with
questions from four winged girls as the fifth tries to calm them down. She
gets a halo, that won't stay on so they have to use cloth and wire to hold it in
place. She's asked about what her dream was but found out that all she
remembers about anything was that she was falling. The importance of the
dream is that all Haibane are named after their dream, and she is named Rakka,
which means falling in Japanese. Once the others leaves Reki tries to
explain what happens before Rakka's wings grow and so does her fever.
Unfortunately the wings grow faster then expected, and Reki has no time to
explain what is going on. Reki spends the next few hours cleaning the
blood of her wings, so it wont stain. The halo statically charges Rakka's
hair and nothing can bring it down. Welcome to Old Home.
Episode 2- Town and Wall · Toga · Haibane-Renmei
The
episode begins with Rakka still uncomfortable with her wings as she fusses with
her dress. One of the little girls, Hana teaches Rakka how to mover her
wings. When the other Haibane come to breakfast, we learn that Reki's
dream is of her walking down a pebbled path. The name Reki comes from the
word gareki, meaning little stones. Then the group, excluding Reki goes to
show Rakka the town of Glie. Glie hasn't too much technology, besides electricity,
clocks, radios and the sort. The town is made like an eastern European
town, looking mostly English. They decide to go to the thrift store, where
the clerk gives Rakka a free article of clothing, while giving the others one
from the unwashed and unsorted clothes. It's the sailor suit she's
sporting up above. The gruff clerk is kind though, and gives Rakka
wing-slits in her dress for free. She learns of the Haibane-Renmei, or
Charcoal Feather Federation. She also learns about the notebook that the
Haibane have to use in order to purchase items. The exciting part of the
day is when the Toga arrive to trade. Only the Communicator, who is a
member of the Haibane-Renmei, can talk to Toga. Kuu nearly gets them in
trouble when he yells something to the Toga, and Nemu drags the group
away. When Rakka sees one of the crow she gets side tracked for a
second. They all return to Old Home after that. When they return the
Haibane-Renmei leave a name tag, and a note for Rakka. Wondering why they
knew Rakka's name, Kana explains that they use frightening magic. Rakka,
being scared is reminded by Nemu that she wrote her name down in the thrift
shop. Rakka returns to find that Reki was waiting for her. When she
goes into the other room falls victim to the fever. Rakka's halo holder
falls off. Then she falls asleep. Good night, Reki.
